What's left of
vocable was doing her Chinese homework on my computer this afternoon, and I thought I should share this translated story of hers with you all.
Not to be Literate
(1) There is a mountain where a tiger
is about to injure people and about to injure domestic animals.
(2) A hunter plans to catch the tiger.
(3) He goes to set a trap to wait for it.
(4) He makes a big written character to write on the top of a wall, which says:
(5) “Below there is a tiger trap. On (this) road, people, your pace (must) halt!”
(6) The big written character is almost done being composed.
(7) The Village People, who are not literate, pass over that which is below the written character on the wall.
(8) They sing while they walk.
(9) It is a mistake to walk on a tiger trap and moreover to fall into the middle of it.
(10) They make a great shout to ask for help.
(11) When he comes out, a person explains for them that the wall’s top is where the fair writing is.
(12) The Village People sigh and say:
(13) “We resemble the literati.
How can it be that we have reached such perfection?”
